Brutalust

Brutalust was the second exhibition at K6 Gallery. I curated the show and invited writer Owen Hatherley to select his favourite twenty modernist and brutalist buildings in Southampton. Three photographers Greg Moss, Daniel Cane, and James Newell were then asked to photograph the buildings for the exhibition.

A talk and publication were organised to complement the show. The talk sold out and all 120 copies of the publication, which I designed, also sold out.

Promotion for the exhibition included a collaboration with Badger Press to create experimental bespoke flyers, this involved using an inked roller to capture the texture of the concrete buildings in each individual flyer, the text was then overprinted using a risograph.

Press coverage was high, with articles on The Modern House and BBC. I was also invited to speak in the studio on BBC South Today.

God’s House Tower

‘a space’ arts is currently working on an ambitious project to refurbish and reopen Southampton’s 700 year old God’s House Tower into a new Arts and Heritage venue following a £1.6 million grant from HLF.

I’ve been involved in a number of ways in the build up to the venue reopening. Including research and design for the GHT website, and early press releases.

As part of the Southampton Fringe in 2016 the building reopened to the public for a week with and hosted a range of cultural events. This included 700 women, a project by artist Sarah Filmer to bring 700 women through the building to help address the gender imbalance in the written history of the space.

The event was a huge success and generated considerable press attention with the Daily Echo, BBC and The Guardian all publishing articles. Below are photos are by Greg Moss, who I invited to photograph the building. His high quality photos were then used for the Guardian article.

Arches Open Studios

2016 Arches Open Studios was my first Open Studios since working with ‘a space’ arts. It was also its most successful to date. Visitor numbers were up significantly on previous years.

I was brought in to give greater definition and to the marketing plan. A particular area of focus was print, where I was able to work with a couple of printers to produce a run of flyers and a fold out directory that profiled each of the resident artists.

Southampton Fringe

In 2016 Southampton hosted British Art Show 8.

Southampton Cultural Development Trust won Arts Council England funding to enable a Fringe Festival to run alongside the BAS8. This led to a number of artists and organisations across the city to put on events across the 3 month duration of the exhibition. With K6 Gallery we ran two successful events, a Bring Your Own Beamer night and an immersive installation in the phone boxes by artist Paul Vivian.

I was also employed by Southampton Cultural Trust to document the Southampton Fringe. As well as photographing the majority of the events I sourced photographs from other photographers and artists to create an image library for the festival.
